Elusive Species Calls Mountaintop Home

November 23, 2013, 0 Comments

High in the mountain tops of Mount Kaputar in Australia, researchers have discovered an odd new species thought to exist nowhere else in the world. Despite periodic sightings of large, pink slugs by locals, the official existence of the new 8-inch species was only just recently confirmed by taxonomists after visiting the remote 5,000 ft. mountain peak.

”It’s a tiny island of alpine forest, hundreds of kilometres away from anything else like it,” noted Michael Murphy, a parks ranger at Mount Kaputar. “They are amazing, unreal-looking creatures.”

The continuous discovery of new species serves as an intriguing reminder of how vast and uncharted our planet truly is.
