If I Had Opened My EyesJuly 1, 2014, 0 Comments
It happened last night.
It’s just me and my mom living together. My dad ran off before I was born. One night I was doing my chores before I went to bed. My mom was out buying groceries. I was assigned to dusting every single corner of my house. My blonde hair was in a bun, and my eyes were red and puffy from the dust.
When I finally finished up dusting around the hallway, I noticed my dog daisy was whimpering. I asked her what was wrong and she started growling. She was staring down the hall and slowly backing away. I noticed the room had gotten very cold and it was slightly darker. I was very freaked out for some reason. Thankfully my mom came home that very second and I felt normal again and almost forgot about it.
That night my mom went to bed early and I could hear her snoring. I wasn’t tired so I stayed up on my laptop. I then heard footsteps coming down the hallway. I quickly closed my laptop and fell on my bed and closed my eyes. My door opened and she turned my lights on, but I kept my eyes shut. She turned them off and closed the door. As she was slowly walking down the hall, my heart stopped.
I could still hear snoring.
I was hearing footsteps and snoring at the same time. And It wasn’t like she was sleepwalking or something; the snoring was distant and muffled but the footsteps were very close. My heart was pounding out of my chest.
The footsteps continued. Growing louder and quiet as they paced down the hall. The snoring was distant. Suddenly the footsteps stopped. I heard a door open. I saw light turn on from under the crack of my door. The light turned off and the door closed.
Her snoring continued.
Whatever it was that was pacing down the hallway went into the kitchen. I could hear the footsteps loudly on the echoey tile because the kitchen was so close to my room. I heard the faint skid of the rug that concealed the trapdoor that led to the basement. I heard the trapdoor close and the footsteps were too muffled to hear. I was terrified.
The next morning I woke up. I remembered what had happened the other night and I ran into my moms room and shook her awake. She was very confused. She said, “Cicilia, what’s wrong?” And I was shaking. I told her to come into the kitchen. The trapdoor was uncovered and my mom looked concerned.
I opened the trapdoor and we went down the stairs that led to the basement. The basement was very small. I looked in every corner but there was no one in there.
I still don’t know what that was. But I do fear to this very day what might have happened if I had opened my eyes.
